NHS Artown Talks – On The GO! Series is their Artown summer program that delves into Nevada and Reno history. Make sure to visit Nevada Sunset Winery every Saturday in July to spark your interest in the captivating past of Reno and Nevada with eight engaging programs that are geared towards audiences of all ages. Nevada Colony Corporation Stock Certificate, NHS.

Dear Comrade: Correspondence and Other Records of the Nevada Colony Corporation
Learn about the rapid rise and fall of a Nevada socialist colony.

Presented by Sarah Patton, NHS Archivist

In 1916, a socialist colony was founded outside of Fallon. Established by the Nevada Colony Corporation and known as Nevada City, it attracted interest from individuals across the country and internationally. Less than three years later, the colony had dissolved. Through the records of the Nevada Colony Corporation, issues of the community’s paper “The Co-Operative Colonist,” and other sources, learn about the rapid rise and fall of this experimental community.

Sarah Patton

Sarah Patton is the Archivist at the Nevada Historical Society, where she oversees the library, manuscripts, and photographs collections; runs the Research Library; and responds to reference inquiries. Before she arrived at the NHS in 2022, she was the Research Services Manager at the Hoover Institution Library & Archives at Stanford University.

 

Nevada Capitol

Nevada State Capitol
Learn about the history of the Nevada State Capitol.

Presented by Tom McDonald, NHS Docent

This program explores the early days (1858-1871) of Carson City, leading to the building of the State Capitol, and examines the magnificent 154-year-old building and its renovations from its opening to the present day.

Tom McDonald

Tom McDonald is now a full-time volunteer with various local entities, including the Nevada Historical Society and the Nevada State Museum.  As a history docent for the NSM’s education department, he has given hundreds of tours of the Capital Plaza and the Capitol Building, sharing the history of Nevada government, its buildings, and the early history of the state.
