Nevadan Basque Portraits Exhibition
This exhibit focuses on a selection of portraits of individuals with a Nevadan Basque connection, painted from life by Zoe Bray. The portraits explore the different ways that Basque identity can be made and represented.
Illustrations
Zoe Bray’s fun-loving and whimsical drawings painted with watercolor, and sometimes as pop-ups on upcycled cereal boxes, showcase different natural and cultural environments, including our beautiful Great Basin.
Artist Bio:
Zoe Bray is a portrait artist, illustrator and writer from Europe. Settling on this side of the globe, it dawned on her how, just over a hundred years earlier, her great grandfather had also emigrated in very different circumstances, to work as a sheepherder in Nevada. While he then returned to the Basque Country (with one eye less, having been kicked in the face by a horse), Zoe chose to live in a few more places (Israel and Palestine), and finally make Reno her home. Zoe has had the privilege of getting to know fellow Nevadans through the process of her painting. She recently published her first children’s story ‘What Amatxi whispered’, about a child of immigrants navigating different cultures and places. Zoe is now working on writing and illustrating more of her adventures, set in Nevada and the Basque Country and other contexts.
