5:00 – 5:30 pm – Book signing and wine/cheese Reception
5:30 – 6:30 pm – Lecture
Speaker: Zoe Bray, Ph. D., author and artist
Title of Talk: What Amatxi Whispered / Zer xuxurlatu didan Amatxik
Summary of Talk: Zoe Bray will talk about her children’s Book that was published by the Center for Basque Studies. Dr. Bray taught classes with UNR for several years before dedicating her time to her art. She will talk about her background, process for writing the book and creating the illustrations for this bilingual book.
Book Overview: Artemisia lives in Nevada, and happily spends her time along the Truckee River. Artemisia is also Basque, on her mother’s side, though this doesn’t really mean much to her… until she goes to visit Amatxi, her grandmother, in the Basque Country. There, she discovers the existence of something magical that will always be with her, wherever she may be. What Amatxi Whispered / Zer xuxurlatu didan Amatxik, written in both English and Basque, is a story of child of immigrants navigating different cultures and places.
Speaker Bio: Zoe Bray is an artist from the Basque Country. Settling on this side of the globe, it dawned on her how, just over a hundred years earlier, her great grandfather had also emigrated, in very different circumstances, to work as a sheepherder in Nevada. While he then returned to the Basque Country (with one eye less, having been kicked in the face by a horse), Zoe chose to live in a few more places (Israel and Palestine), and then make Nevada her home. She presently lives in Reno, with her German partner and their two children, who, she hopes, will also grow to connect with their natural environment and indigenous knowledge wherever they are.
The Writers’ Wednesday Lecture Series, held the second Wednesday of each month, features a different author who takes part in a book signing, a presentation and question-and-answer session with the audience. A wine and cheese reception precedes the lecture.
The intent of the program is to highlight writers who specifically focus on Nevada, the Great Basin, or the West in general. The authors talk about the content of their books but also share details about the creative process.
Make sure to arrive early as we have limited seating available in our Event Space. Don’t forget, we provide free, temporary parking permits to make it easier to visit NHS!
