Join Neal Cobb and our monthly speakers as we explore interesting topics and join in the audience conversations.
Title of Program: The Historic Sutro Tunnel’s Past, Present & Future: Live from the Sutro Tunnel
Summary of Program: Our speakers will talk about the historic Sutro Tunnel and townsite of Sutro, NV, located in present-day Dayton, NV. This presentation will be broadcast live from the historic Sutro Tunnel Site to see the work that the friend’s group has accomplished to date.
The talk will share the history of Adolph Sutro, the visionary of the Sutro Tunnel, as well as the history of the Tunnel itself. The Tunnel was created to drain excess, nuisance water from the Comstock Lode’s mines in and around Virginia City, NV as well as provide transportation to and from the Comstock.
Learn why the Tunnel was an engineering marvel and remains a draw for history-lovers today.

Speaker Highlight: Nathan Tobey and Spencer Davidson are part of the Friends of Sutro Tunnel Charity (501c3). They are part of the Friends of Sutro Tunnel Charity volunteers and donors that are working to restore the townsite of Sutro, Nevada and work on rebuilding the first 50 feet inside the Tunnel itself.
About Friends of Sutro Tunnel: Friends of Sutro Tunnel Charity, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. The Friends of Sutro Tunnel organization is working to preserve this significant part of Nevada’s mining history by restoring the Sutro Tunnel and Site. The goal of the project is to not only preserve the site’s historical integrity, but to also make it safe and accessible for visitors. Phase One of the project is currently underway with the focus being on rebuilding the tunnel, ongoing site cleanup, and protecting remaining structures from further deterioration.
About Sutro Tunnel: The Sutro Tunnel is a drainage tunnel connected to the Comstock Lode in Northern Nevada. It begins at Dayton, Nevada, and connects 3.88 miles Northwest to the Savage mine in Virginia City, Nevada. The Sutro Tunnel pioneered the excavation of large drainage and access tunnels in the United States.
